Each camping spot is pre-chosen, and all are in shady groves of trees with stunning views over the glistening river. Meals are simple, hearty and delicious, and are cooked in the tiniest of bush kitchens or braai-style (who knew you could make a lemon meringue pie over a fire?!). Lunch is served under the trees, or for a special treat, in the shallow waters of the river – perfect for cooling tired toes.
You'll stay in traditional, walk-in camping tents, with proper (and quite comfortable) beds. Open-air bathrooms have bucket showers, heated by coals and prepared for your arrival, and long-drop loos, complete with a wooden "throne" for your comfort! There’s no electricity, but plenty of paraffin lamps and torches to light the way when darkness falls.
Walking, walking and more walking! Each day, you’ll cover around 10 kilometres on walks that last roughly four hours, accompanied by some of Robin Pope’s top guides. On moving days, the team leaps into action as you leave, making sure that you arrive at the new site to find it complete with ready-made beds and a cool G&T! On the first and last nights at Nkwali Camp and Tena Tena, game drives are also available, mixing activities up nicely.
