At the heart of the camp, two vast canvas mess tents sit on a solid timber platform, with a bar and lounge with comfortable armchairs and sofas to one side, and a covered indoor restaurant area on the other. Just in front are two open fire pits, where traditional sundowners are served before dinner. The camp overlooks Banagi Valley and is completely open to the wilderness – Masai guards are on permanent patrol, as lions and hyenas are frequent visitors.
Sixteen spacious tents lie in a semi-circle a short stroll from the main area. Each has an en-suite bathroom with hot running water for the shower and basin, and proper flush toilets. Interiors are roomy and comfortable, with huge double or twin beds and a separate dressing alcove. In front is a small terrace with a table and comfortable camp chairs – a peaceful spot to relax between game drives and look out for wildlife in the valley beyond.
Game viewing is rewarding throughout the year, with drives between sunrise and sunset offering the chance to see good numbers of plains game – elephant, rhino, buffalo, giraffe and numerous antelope species – together with the big cats, and plenty of spotted hyena. When the wildebeest migration moves through the valley, generally mid-year and at the end of the year, the game-viewing experience ramps up a few notches. Arrange a hot-air balloon safari for a bird's-eye view of the action.
