About Sable Sands

A couples' paradise just outside Zimbabwe's game-rich Hwange National Park.
Sable Sands may be a wordplay on South Africa's renowned Sabi Sand game reserve, but it's earning plenty of merit in its own right. On Hwange's doorstep within a private concession of the Sikumbi Forest Reserve, adjacent to the national park's airstrip, the lodge is the project of a Zimbabwean/Dutch couple devoted to this pristine little corner of the African bush. Here they're all about doing things well and with a light ecological footprint. It's a family-friendly establishment and that serves delicious food and pays close attention to the details. The lodge offers genuine warmth and ever the opportunity of great armchair game viewing.

Property details

The property

The lounge, dining area and bar all sit under an expansive double-storey thatched area. The roof is cleverly designed to allow for the free-flow of air and the upper deck offers exceptional views of the surrounding bush and camp waterhole. Furnishings are simple and maybe a little sparse, but the bar is naturally adorned with a magnificent rosewood tree. An impressive leadwood holds a treehouse - great for a siesta or a view of the waterhole. There's also a hammock in which you can shoot the breeze, and a pool to cool off in (although the elephants like to drink this water, which means it isn't always the cleanest).

The rooms

Instead of tents, there are sixteen traditional yet modern thatched rondavels (round huts). They have a distinctly African feel to them in the decor and layout. The ensuite bathrooms have a bathtub, shower and all the amenities you might need. Double or twin beds are draped with large mosquito nets and a simple porch sits out front. Though spacious enough, these rooms are nothing fancy. Ask for one of the rondavels with a view of the waterhole or the vlei.
