About Sava Dunes

Chilled-out barefoot luxury on a remote southern African coast, with really good cuisine
Along the blissful stretch of Mozambique's southern Inhambane coastline, 500 km north of its capital Maputo, you'll find the warm Indian Ocean lapping uninhabited golden beaches. This is Sava Dunes, arguably the most luxurious and reliable accommodation along these shores. Previously Blue Footprints eco-lodge, the exclusive camp has just five suites, each perched atop a dune with glorious views of the sea. It's completely off-grid and solar-powered, but somehow manages to serve up MasterChef-quality cuisine. The real draw though, is the phenomenal marine life, the endless beaches and warm water – right on your doorstep.

Property details

The property

The ocean is always on show through foldaway glass doors from the seaside deck and the lounge, both of which have ample seating and walls hung with photographs of the region. At the back of the lounge, a bar opens to the pool (yes, there's a swim-through service). To one side is the dining area, with a wooden table that's seen fine meals and new friendships forming, and a covered deck with a bar and, one step away, the beach.

The rooms

Five suites strung along the dunes are connected to the main area by a raised wooden walkway. Inside, a king-sized bed, draped with a mosquito net, sits at the room's centre with a sofa at its foot. The en-suite bathroom is integrated, separated from the bed by only an open storage unit. On the deck are a hammock and a swinging chair, and a couple of cushioned wicker chairs overlooking the rolling waves. Tea or coffee are delivered at sunrise.

Activities

The ocean is your playground. Snorkel the nearby estuary, and go SCUBA diving to get close to iconic marine creatures such as whale sharks, dolphins, manta rays, humpback whales (in season), and turtles. Big-game fishing, kayaking, dhow-sailing and horse riding can be arranged with trusted local operators, or grab a bodyboard from the lodge and ride a few waves (there's bigger surf beyond Tofo). Or simply dip in the pool and float up to the bar for a cocktail.
