Property details

The property

The camp's main areas feel airy, open, and connected to the natural surrounds. Meals are served in the open-plan, thatched dining area perched above the river, lit by paraffin lamps with food lovingly prepared by local chefs. Batteries can be charged at the bar between 18:00 and 22:00 in the evening. The camp enjoys close links with local communities and is staffed by people who love the bush and delight in extending hospitality and sharing their knowledge of wilderness.

The rooms

The lodge offers two accommodation options for different levels of budget-conscious traveller. Six comfortable Mudhut rooms overlook the river, with earth walls and thatched roofs. Their en-suite bathrooms have handmade ceramic basins, flush toilets, and showers with hot water. Then for guests who prefer more affordable amenities and a 'wilder' experience, there are four rather unpretentious canvas bivouacs in a forest campsite. These sleep two people, have shared bathrooms and are equipped with beds, tables, chairs and palm frond mats.

Activities

One of the best ways to experience Nyerere National Park is to jump in a boat and chug up the Rufiji River. Various water safaris leave from Selous River Camp to spot the countless hippos, crocodiles and beautiful birdlife that await. And the sunsets, of course! Game drives are offered, venturing into the Reserve in open game viewers to track down some of the larger game, including elephants, lion, cheetah, and perhaps even the elusive wild dogs that use the vast reserve to hunt their prey. Guided bush walks are also on offer if you'd like to delve a little deeper and experience the smaller creatures and signs of the bush.
