Open-plan luxury tents cleverly designed to magnify the seclusion and expanse of the African bush. A habitat could scarcely be more diverse: open plains of grazing buck yield to dense, bird-plenty thickets, sudden plummets of rocky ravines are carved by the Bushman's River. Conveniently located along the Garden Route, this lodge is an easy-to-access thoroughgoing wilderness with Big Five game viewing and a host of other general and rare wildlife to boot. Shamwari is known for its conservation ethics, offering additional educational activities through its Animal Rehab Centre, Born Free Big Cat Sanctuaries and Ian Player Rhino Awareness Centre.
Traditional thatch and canvass give this camp its rustic charm. The decor's natural tones are well suited to the bush; its emphasis on comfort above style give it an easy, down-to-earth feel. Open-air decks provide a platform for in-camp game viewing above the water's edge. A swimming pool and plenty of cushioned seating nooks allow for quiet relaxation between activities. You'll love the glowing lanterns in the evenings. The spa overlooking the watering hole is a must-do.
Twelve tents make up this intimate camp - nine are considered Luxury tents, while three are Superior class. All the tents have a private plunge pool and large indoor baths and showers along with modern amenities like international adaptors, bar fridges and hairdryers. The Superior tents have all of the same facilities as the Luxury Tents but also have their own private deck with a hammock and a fireplace for the chillier evenings.
Experience morning and afternoon game drives with a friendly and knowledgeable guide. You never know what you'll see out there - perhaps the rare nocturnal aardwolf or brown hyena? Slow the pace a little with a walking safari, where you'll intimately experience the geography, plant and birdlife of the area, while fine-tuning your eye and ear to the signs and sounds of the bush. Don't miss the renowned wildlife rehabilitation centres and sanctuaries that makes Shamwari a key player in the conservation world.
