About Simbavati Camp George

A well-established, luxury camp set in pretty gardens within a private Kruger reserve.

Set in the heart of the Klaserie, one of the largest privately-owned reserves in South Africa, Camp George couldn't be more in the centre of the action. Led by highly-experienced guides who know the landscape like their own backyard, game drives and bush walks will take you closer than ever to the Kruger wildlife - and even when you're in camp, there's a strong chance of an elephant wandering along the pathways! The camp has stayed true to its founder and namesake, George Huysamer, weaving together art, nature and heritage in one sublime package. Still in the family today, you'll feel well and truly taken care of, especially in one of the dapper suites, beautifully positioned along the dry riverbed.

Property details

The property

Camp George is wreathed by fenced gardens (perfect for families) where rare South African cycads flourish and huge fever trees provide shade for picnics and birding walks. The interiors are adorned with vibrant local artworks, providing cushy spots to relax and recline. At meal times, tuck into imaginative dishes prepared with fresh, seasonal produce and paired with South African wines – you can even get involved in the preparation at the Chef's Island. In your down time, visit the spa or lounge beside the large pool, watching the animals at the nearby waterhole.

The rooms

The camp has just eight suites, all overlooking the dry riverbed, each with air-conditioning, king-sized beds (twins are available too), and wooden furnishings. Characterised by pops of forest-green, potted plants and stunning wildlife murals, nature is never far away... Bathrooms have an open-plan design and are wonderfully indulgent with a deep soaking tub, double vanities and indoor and outdoor shower – the latter providing stunning views of the landscape.

Activities

The main method of exploration at Camp George is the classic game drive, offered both during the day and at night. The region is famed for its variety of wildlife and you'll likely spot leopard, elephant, rhino, lion, buffalo, hippo and wild dog. Guided bush walks are also an option, and, alongside an experienced guide, you'll learn about the lesser-known aspects of the bush including recognising animal spoor, the medicinal uses of various plants and one or two survival tips. And of course, the gardens are the perfect perch to sit and watch the wildlife go by.
