About Singita Ebony Lodge

A welcoming balance of sophisticated comfort and isolated wilderness
The first of the Singita lodges, Ebony lies beneath spreading jackalberry trees on the banks of the Sand River, the perennial waterway that flows through Singita Private Game Reserve within the larger Sabi Sand Reserve. The lodge has recently been revamped, but the welcoming atmosphere of a place where people have a real love of Africa's wild spaces remains. Here, colonial comfort meets Afro-chic to create a super-comfortable wilderness sanctuary. The reserve area is a game-lover's paradise, with excellent Big Five sightings and a pack of 20-odd rare wild dogs. There are regular birding tours.

Property details

The property

The stone, wood and thatch communal area towers above the river, offering wide, wild views from all angles, especially from the wooden, multi-level deck area. Indoors, the style is deliciously eclectic, combining colonial leather furniture and brass chandeliers with bold fabrics and local artworks. The result? You feel at home from the minute you arrive. There are comfortable seating and dining areas, a bar, library, wine cellar, spa and the Singita gallery. Beyond the glass doors is the aforementioned deck, a swimming pool and a boma for starlit meals.

The rooms

There are 12 private suites, each with its own unique character. Interiors feature curated still-life collections of antiques and artefacts, as well as vintage campaign furniture. Each is air-conditioned and has a large mosquito-tented bed, an en-suite bathroom with inside and outdoor showers and a tub, a minibar fridge and a double-sided fireplace for chilly evenings. The walls are floor-to-ceiling glass, so you really feel at one with the bush. There's a private deck with seating and a heated plunge pool. Your every need has been anticipated!

Activities

There's no shortage of activities, from day and night game drives to walking safaris (which, to be true, tend to focus more on the animals missed during game drives, such as reptiles, insects and birds than the big beasts), mountain biking, community visits, a spa treatment, wine tasting with the in-house sommelier and, for children, the exciting Mini Rangers’ Course. And if you're looking to work off the extravagant cuisine, there's also a fully equipped gym.
