About Sofitel Legend Old Cataract

A famous and uber-charming hotel with a top-tier address on the banks of the River Nile.
Located just where the sands of the Nubian Desert meet the shoreline meet a particularly sparkling, pretty stretch of the River Nile, the Old Cataract has been welcoming guests for over a century. Some of those visitors included Princess Diana and Agatha Christie, who was inspired to write a portion of Death on the Nile here! A makeover saw its selection of rooms cut in half, while increasing to an ample size, making it only more luxurious, although it hasn't lost an ounce of old-world glamour. From the alabaster and gold columns in the lobby to the ruby red chandeliers casting a romantic light, this is a hotel that has earned its place amongst Egypt's finest.

Property details

The property

Set on a pink granite cliff, the hotel is a grand figure overlooking the indigo waters of the Nile. The grounds are primped to perfection and the infinity pool curves along the river, offering splendid views. The iconic 1902 restaurant was modelled after Cairo's Ibn Tulun mosque, evidenced in its Moorish, striped arches and soaring domed ceiling. It serves a menu of French cuisine, while other settings offer everything from Mediterranean and Levantine to high tea overlooking the Nile. Grab a cocktail at The Terrace for the ultimate sunset viewing, or in the moody Piano Bar when it gets dark.

The rooms

Set in either the Palace wing (the original) or the Tower wing (more modern), the rooms are elegant and pristine. Just like their locations, some have a contemporary look, whilst others are named after their famous residents (aka Agatha Christie) with the trimmings to match. Colour schemes range from jewel-bright greens to rich reds, and all feature a Signature Sofitel bed, plush furnishings, and en-suites with a deep marble bathtub, rain shower, and Hermès toiletries. All Tower rooms enjoy a balcony with Nile vistas and the luxury suites feature spacious lounges, double showers, and refined detailing.

Activities

A commercial hub in Ancient Egypt, Aswan has plenty of history to share. Head to the Nubian Museum to get your fill of trivia before visiting the colourful villages, astonishing Philae Temple, and Unfinished Obelisk (you'll be amazed to see how Egyptians of old built them). Then, take a felucca ride to the Elephantine Island, or visit the Tombs of the Nobles and the heavenly gardens on Kitchener's Island, and, when back at the hotel, allow yourself to be pampered in the sumptuous spa.
