About Somalisa Acacia Camp

Family-friendly luxury tented camp in Zimbabwe's great Hwange Park.
Somalisa Acacia lies in one of the most scenic concessions in Hwange - Zimbabwe's largest national park, famous for its huge population of elephants. The camp is situated on the same acacia island as its sister camp (Somalisa), on the edge of a nutrient-rich floodplain that draws plenty of game to its grasses and the camp waterholes. Both locations were rebuilt to the highest standards of luxury, Acacia making a special effort to accommodate families. However luxurious, the emphasis here is still very much on the bush itself. And to get the most from your stay, it's best to visit during the dry season when the game is drawn to the available water.

Property details

The property

The main area is particularly spacious for a four-roomed camp. The slightly raised deck ends in an elephant drinking pool that provides much in-house entertainment. In the centre of the deck is a humans-only swimming pool and a brick boma with a fire pit. Down on ground level is another communal fireplace with the main dining area, protected by a natural tree-trunk enclosure. There are several other comfortable seating areas upstairs on the deck and in the artistically decorated lounge - cozy up next to the indoor fireplace or the trendy cocktail bar.

The rooms

There are just four luxurious Sail tents at Somalisa Acacia, including two family suites which consist of two rooms linked by inter-leading doors. Note the fine attention to detail like the copper bathtubs and the iron/glass fireplaces. The rooms have spectacular uninterrupted views of the floodplain through ceiling-to-floor sliding mesh doors. Each tent has a king size bed, a private lounge area and an outside deck with comfortable seating. The en suite bathrooms also have large indoor and outdoor showers.

Activities

Game viewing is most rewarding during the dry winter months when animals tend to congregate in great numbers around the park's waterholes. Between June and October you're likely to see hundreds of elephants and buffalo in a single day, as well as many other species including lion, zebra and giraffe. Hwange is also home to rarer species such as wild dogs, cheetah, roan and sable. Walks are lead by highly qualified guides and usually incorporate the beautiful camelthorn woodlands and some interesting insights into the bush. And there's always the possibility of an adrenalin-filled encounter with some big game. You can also while away the hours at a hide - a great way to observe wildlife while going unnoticed.

What you'll love

What you'll love

The elephant viewing from camp is about as good as it gets, especially when a whole herd decides to take a drink from the pool at the edge of the deck, or bathe in the waterhole just a few metres away.

The guides are great with kids and offer some of the best natural science lessons and entertainment a kid could ever hope for - whether it's on a game drive, mini walking safari or just sitting in camp, they'll be sure to open many an eye to the smaller wonders of the bush.
