About Somalisa Expeditions

Rustic bush camp with a luxurious touch on the edge of an ancient floodplain
Within a private concession of Zimbabwe's Hwange National Park, Somalisa Expeditions sits tucked into a cluster of acacia trees, near the game-rich Kennedy vlei line. This rustic camp has bucket showers and is solar powered but also offers lovely indulgent touches and a high level of service. This mostly ground-level camp overlooks a much-frequented waterhole, especially popular with elephants. Because it sits on a private concession within the national park it is afforded the utmost flexibility in activities, including walks and night drives.

Property details

The property

In the heart of camp is a large rectangular tent, surrounded by low decking. This is home to an intimate lounge, the camp's large dining table and a simple but adequate bar and tea station. Just outside this area is another lounging area - a great place to while away the hours (if a bit exposed during the midday heat). Down a few steps is another large deck, in the centre of which is the fire pit which provides oodles of evening atmosphere before and after dinner. One of the camp's most notable features is the large cement basin just off the deck, from which elephants frequently quench their thirst.

The rooms

There are seven two-person, simple but elegant A-frame tents with foldaway flaps and zip-down doors. Out the back of the tent is the alfresco bathroom with shower, toilet and a single basin. Tents make good use of their space, fitting in a writing desk a small dressing area and two cushioned chairs. Out front of each tent is a small deck, each with unobstructed views across the plain. Solar powered bulbs ensure light around the clock and bucket showers are heated.

Activities

Game drives are generally very successful, especially when sticking to the water holes during the dry months. Elephant sightings are especially good at this time but a host of other wildlife can be seen in this region year-round including lion, leopard, hyena, zebra, kudu and sable. A walk with a Zimbabwean guide is a treat not to be passed on if possible and permitted by the grass level. Night drives can be undertaken on the camp's private concession - a chance to view the lesser-seen nocturnal residents like honey badgers, bush babies and hyena.
