About Sweetwaters Serena Camp

A large camp next to a waterhole in award-winning wildlife Eden, Ol Pejeta.
This highly rated lodge lies in the centre of the 360-square-kilometre Ol Pejeta Conservancy, a sanctuary that sprawls across the plains overlooked by Mount Kenya. The ecosystem here supports one of Africa's highest densities of wildlife, from black rhino (and the rest of the Big Five) to antelopes, primates and many birds. Watch the animals hunt, graze, breed and fight for survival on the plains, then return to camp, a sheltered oasis set around a waterhole. Gaze across the alternately lush and golden plains towards snow-capped Mount Kenya, and get up-close sightings of the creatures that visit the waterhole.

Property details

The property

The main building has floor-to-ceiling views of the conservancy through large windows and French doors, and houses the Kashoggi Bar and lounge (with a fireplace that blazes comfortingly on chilly evenings). Meals are served buffet-style in the Rhino Restaurant, and the selection of regional and international dishes is fresh and delicious. The Waterhole Bar, built to resemble a game-viewing hide, overlooks the waterhole, which is illuminated at night. Outdoors are a pool and benches for relaxing. Wi-fi available.

The rooms

The camp has 39 luxury tents, each with its own private veranda overlooking the waterhole. The tents are arranged in two rows, all reached via stone pathways that wind through the landscaped grounds. Each tent has a draped canvas interior, solid floor, comfortable beds and en-suite bathroom. Mosquito nets are provided, as are hot-water bottles at night. Some of the tents are on raised platforms with private balconies, while others have private verandas with safari chairs and tables.

Activities

The lodge offers day and night game drives, bush walks, birdwatching walks, lion-tracking, and camel rides around the camp or into the conservancy. The professional nature guides give nightly talks and video presentations on wildlife. Visit the chimpanzee sanctuary, the rhino sanctuary, the Ol Pejeta Educational Centre and the Ereri Cultural Village. Cool off in the swimming pool, play a board game, kick back with a book or relax and watch the passing cavalcade of animals at the waterhole.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The tents all face a very active waterhole so often you can simply sit back with a cuppa and watch the wildlife come to you.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

No visit to Ol Pejeta would be complete without a visit to the Endangered Species Boma to meet the last remaining Northern white rhinos in the world - icons for their species.
Something to think about

Something to think about

The central location of the camp means that in high season traffic, can get heavy and you may find yourself sharing sightings with several other cars.
