The mess tent and dinning area sits atop a slightly elevated section of the island, looking out over the lake and a small beach. Meals are served communally in the mess and there's a small bar, stocked with plenty of cold beer (what more do you need?!). In the evenings, hurricane lanterns light the way to a camp fire on the beach - the perfect place to watch the twinkling stars and bubbling volcanoes in the distance.
Lake Tchegera was opened in 2015 and the rooms and furnishing are still in mint condition. Tents are safari-style Menu numbers and far from flashy, but with simple dressing areas, very comfortable twin or double beds and ensuite complete with solar powered showers and flushing loos, they are well-appointed and have everything you might need. Outside, small shade-covered verandas offer magnificent vistas over the lake, making waking up in the morning an absolute delight.
There's no denying that Lake Tchegera is a camp that's fond of relaxation, and days are for ambling around the island on the pathways, dipping your toes in the cool water or spending time with your binos and the excellent birdlife. If you're still full of beans, hire a kayak and explore the hidden corners, or paddle-board across the mill-pond water - the area in front of camp is wonderfully protected from the elements.
The bewitching home of mountain gorilla, dramatic volcanoes and experiences you’ll remember forever.
