Behind the restored facade is a thoroughly modern interior, where the spaces are sleek and carefully considered, inviting rather than intimidating. The double-storey house has six bedrooms for up to 12 guests. Slip outside to unwind in either of the two large outdoor lounges, with dining tables – both fine wining and lounging entertainment areas. There's a gated pool, and a large garden with plush, velvety grass. Inside you'll find a reception room, a formal dining room and living room.
On the ground floor, four en-suite bedrooms (two of which are in a separate wing) open to the wraparound patio. Upstairs is a master bedroom, and a second room with twin beds. The decor throughout is up-to-the-minute in that calm, feng shui style, with soft neutral greys, creams and taupe, brightened with splashes of turquoise and dusky purple. Original artworks decorate the walls, and there's aircon, discreetly mounted flatscreen TVs, and bathrooms with deep tubs, walk-in showers and underfloor heating.
The Homestead makes for a dream family vacation, with oodles of space for everyone and something for all palates. If wine is your fancy, of course you've come to the right place. Tour Oldenburg itself, tasting its several varietals (said to express the eight special elements of its unique terroir), and the myriad estates in Stellenbosch and Franschhoek. Feeling like some exercise? The area offers great hiking, mountain biking, trout fishing and, our favourite pastime, exceptional dining.
The perfect backdrop to a culinary, historical and wine-orientated stay in the Winelands.
