The Tulbagh

Inside the thatched 1859 homestead is a traditional central space with large oak tables, a dark-wood bar and comfy chairs facing a cosy wood-burning fireplace (one of two fireplaces here). A rooftop terrace is the best place to enjoy sundowners, with mountain views. Then head to the Olive Terrace Bistro and Karee Wine Bar for delicious meals created using locally sourced products. Dine alfresco in the tree-shaded courtyard. There's a small conference centre, an in-house spa and three pool areas.

The main hotel building has eight contemporary-styled rooms with a quaint courtyard and terraced series of swimming pools. Two of the town's earliest homes, Winterhoek Manor and the Toll House, have been added as annexes, each with five period rooms. The decor throughout is inspired by the environment and history, with light-coloured linens, glamorous chandeliers and slipper baths combined with traditional yellowwood floors and beamed ceilings. Feeling romantic? The Honeymoon Suite has two fireplaces and bathroom designed for lovers.

Considering it's just an hour or two from Cape Town, Tulbagh is in a class all its own, cupped in a mountainous valley and surrounded by enough wine farms to satisfy the keenest of cellarmen. Stroll the streets to admire the heritage properties, museums and art galleries. Venture a short distance from town to visit more wine and olive farms, go hiking, horseback riding or mountain biking, or play golf. Afterwards, soothe your sightseeing muscles at the hotel's spa.
