The Vineyard is an elegant inn surrounded by three hectares of lush gardens, and even a small vineyard, on Table Mountain's eastern slopes. Built in 1800 as a country cottage by diarist Lady Anne Barnard, wife of the then colonial secretary, the building has retained its vintage feel whilst providing ultra-modern amenities throughout its 208 rooms, suites and cottages. There are a number of award-winning restaurants on the premises, together with a range of facilities that offer world-class hospitality and wellness options. This tranquil urban retreat is just a 10-minute drive from the centre of Cape Town.

The property

The hotel has various restaurants, coffee bars and garden terraces serving fine cuisine across a range of styles, from casual light snacks and pool-side lunches to elaborate multi-course banquets and wine-tasting sessions. Fortunately, there's a fitness centre and spa to work off those meals, a swimming pool with a sun deck, and a second indoor heated pool. The quiet library and guest lounge is situated just off the reception foyer, and younger guests will enjoy the supervised children’s games room.

The rooms

Accommodation ranges from standard doubles and deluxe rooms to vast suites and self-catering apartment-style cottages. All 208 rooms are elegantly decorated in subtle pastels and natural colours, with fine linens, modern practical furnishings, and welcome extra luxuries like Nespresso coffee stations and wi-fi. Rooms are spread over three floors , all with en-suite bathrooms, private balconies or garden patios with restful views of the gardens, the working vineyard and Table Mountain in the background.

Activities

The range of leisure facilities in the grounds include a fitness centre, a large outdoor swimming pool and a smaller indoor heated pool. A luxurious spa offers pampering beauty packages and wellness treatments. The gardens have a network of pathways (ask for a guided tour – the resident horticulturalist is a fount of knowledge), and there is a circular jogging route around Newlands which starts and finishes at the hotel. Cape Town’s tourist attractions are all within easy driving distance.

The Vineyard is a sanctuary in every sense of the word from the beautiful gardens and the river walk along the bottom of the property to the calm, peaceful interiors.

Insiders Tip

Some rooms open out to the Japanese-inspired courtyard (lovely), but others face the mountain (even lovelier).

Something to think about

The hotel is on the larger side, so some elements of the service aren’t super personalised and you may have to wait for tables at breakfast and dinner.
