The main lodge is perched on the banks of the Zambezi. There's an open-sided tented area, scattered with sofas and cushions, as well as a sheltered lounge and library also with comfy couches, plush cushions and ethnic throws. Stunning African art lines the walls, and mod-cons haven't been forgotten either with solar powered charging points and Wi-Fi. On the outer deck is a small gym and spa, a sunken boma and fire pit area, and an infinity pool, seemingly hovering above the river.
Thorntree has 10 double or twin tented suites, each with a cosy lounge opening out to a private deck and plunge pool. Inside, there's a wonderful sense of space beneath the pitched canvas roofs, and wide glass panels along the sides make the most of the fabulous river views. Bathrooms are en-suite, with a roll-top bath and outdoor shower. A further two suites with two adjoining bedrooms and a private plunge pool are perfect for families.
A highlight here is the lodge’s close proximity to Victoria Falls, with daily trips to view them and to explore the quaint town of Livingstone. The fantastic range of activities on offer includes adrenalin-filled adventures like bungee jumping, white water rafting and tiger fishing expeditions, or more sedate but no less exciting guided game drives and bush walks in the National Park to track white rhino and other wildlife species. Sunset river cruises in Thorntree’s private boat offer a more relaxing way to experience the Zambezi.
Thorntree River Lodge is owned by African Bush Camps who has been dedicated to improving the lives of communities near their camps in Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia. Focused on education, empowerment, and conservation, they tackle challenges like unemployment, food scarcity, and wildlife poaching. With a commitment to sustainability, they cover operating costs, ensuring that every guest's stay directly supports their impactful projects, fostering a partnership to preserve Africa's natural heritage. A contribution of $85 per guest, which is included in the nightly rate, goes towards the above goals.
