There is no main area as such, since Tok Tokie trails does not operate out of a permanent camp. Instead, a support team will set up camp ahead of your arrival each evening, which includes a bar, a campfire with a few camp chairs and a dining table set under the Namib sky, around which a three course meal is served. At lunch, the team sets up a large tarpaulin so you can eat (and have a siesta) in the shade. The facilities are simple but the views and the experience are exceptional.
Your "tents" have no walls or roof - just a sky for a ceiling and the desert sands as a floor. With a maximum of eight guests on each trail, you're guaranteed a bit of privacy behind a dune. You'll find a stretcher bed topped with a thick foam mattress, crisp sheets, a duvet and a fluffy pillow - all protected by a waterproof canvas. A hot water bottle is a particular comfort on cold winter nights. There's one communal "bathroom" at each trail camp, consisting of a bucket shower and a long drop toilet. Both are kept spotless and boast stunning views.
The trail starts around noon with lunch at the old farmhouse. At three, you'll start with a short drive to the trailhead, then walk for about two hours to the first night's camp. The second day sets out early to take advantage of the cooler hours, but the pace is comfortable with plenty of stops for tea and lunch - even a good siesta. In the afternoon the hike continues until the second overnight camp is reached. The next morning there is time for a leisurely breakfast before the walk sets off again, returning to the farm house just before midday. Throughout the trail your guide will point out plant and animal life, offering exceptional in-depth knowledge, all the while creating a relaxed atmosphere that encourages you to absorb the magical surroundings.
