About Torra Bay

Roughing it on Namibia's equally alluring and foreboding Skeleton Coast.
With icy Atlantic waters and treacherous trade winds battering its shore, Namibia's notorious Skeleton Coast has little to no beachside holiday appeal. Nevertheless, it attracts a constant stream of adventurers. At Torra Bay, a campsite in the Skeleton Coast Park that offers little except a shop with the basics, a fuel station and ablution blocks, the visitors are dedicated anglers. They're here (between 1 December and 31 January) for the exceptional shore-based sport fishing. Though this experience is rugged and challenging and requires good planning, every fisherman will no doubt manage to collect plentiful fodder for his collection of yarns.

Property details

The property

The grocery store stocks staples, though prices can be high – we recommend you bring your own provisions: firewood, drinks, water, and packaged foods. There's a fuel pump here, though having an extra canister is essential when travelling Namibia's sparsely stationed, gravel roads. Buoys serve as seating around the communal campfire area, which is partially enclosed against the sea winds. Watch the miles-long beach for some surprising creatures, including brown hyena, which prowl the shores for easy seafood carrion.

The rooms

Sixty campsites are arranged and demarcated with wooden poles. Travellers must bring all their own equipment: tents, mattresses, tables, chairs, cooking facilities, a means of shade etc. Ablution blocks have flush toilets and individual heated showers.

Activities

The waters of Torra Bay are home to a variety of large species – steenbras, huge schools of kabeljou, galjoen and blacktail, as well as a good number of sharks. There's a healthy sense of competition among anglers, who naturally congregate in the cleaning area each day, comparing their catch and exchanging friendly banter. By night, the place is aglow with campfires, where beers, fresh grilled seafood and conversation are shared in hearty portions.
