About Wait A Little Tented Camp

Adventurous and intimate Big Five safari for experienced equestrians
If combining your love of wildlife with your passion for horseriding appeals, look what's on offer at Wait a Little! Rides from this lodge traverse an area of 30,000-plus hectares across the Karongwe and the Greater Makalali private game reserves (located an hour from Kruger National Park's Phalaborwa gate). You'll need to be a seasoned horserider though – this is Big Five territory with wild and dangerous animals, and you'll be in the saddle between four and seven hours a day. The terrain is exceptional, with the Drakensberg mountains as a backdrop, broad plains, indigenous woodlands and life-sustaining rivers.

Property details

The property

At night, riders stay in a selection of three more-than-comfortable lodges and a sleep-out camp. Wait A Little, the tented base camp, has a central lounge with comfortable sofas, reference books, a pool and outdoor bar. Rambling XiDulu, set on a dam edge, has a wraparound viewing deck and an infinity pool. Garonga Camp is rustic but refined, with a thatched main area and glistening pool. The sleep-out Beacon Rock camp offers escarpment views and a campfire at its heart.

The rooms

All accommodation is simple but amply comfortable, with great meals to end the day. Wait A Little tented camp has three large tents on platforms overlooking the Makhutswe River, and one permanent rondavel. All have en-suite bathrooms. Twelve-bed Garonga Safari Camp offers breezy accommodation with large netted beds and en-suite bathrooms. XiDulu has a master suite at the dam's edge (super fireplace!) and three further large rooms. At Beacon Rock, guests enjoy unfiltered nature, with mattresses set beneath the stars.

Activities

Horseback safaris are obviously the main attraction, ranging in length and focus, the shortest being the five-night Camp Safari between Wait A Little Camp and Beacon Hill. The seven-night Big Five Safari offers challenging riding. The nine-night Ride and Dine Safari – between Wait A Little Camp, Garonga and XiDulu – caters for riders who enjoy fine dining, or wish to sign up for a cooking course (course attendees spend five nights at Garonga, with morning and afternoon game excursions).
