The main areas of Dune Camp are fittingly tucked into the side of a dune and exude a perfectly-relaxed ambiance. There are two lounges with classic leather sofas, fine wooden tables, and well-stocked bookshelves, as well as a bar and an open-plan kitchen where you can interact with the chef or help yourself to a cold drink. Outside, a long wooden dining table is laid on the deck for shady lunches and starlit dinners. And if you really need to connect to the outside world, head to the WiFi Lounge, a futuristic cube set a little way up the dune.
The six tents are raised on wooden decks, each with sensational views of the desert plains and rugged mountains ahead. They are spacious and stylishly furnished with four-poster beds, large dressing tables and ensuite bathrooms. The sizeable front veranda can accommodate your bed if you wish to sleep under the stars, and each also has a ‘Chiller’ - a small, icy plunge pool that offers a glorious respite from the desert heat. Up the dune is the Family Suite, a beautiful two-bedroom two-bathroom villa with its own lounge and private ‘Chillers.’
Activities are suitably focussed on the astonishing landscapes. Gentle drives on the private reserve reveal a variety of desert wildlife, including gemsbok, springbok, zebra and black-backed jackals. Other ways to enjoy the desert include hot air ballooning, horse-riding and e-biking up along the sandy trails, whilst evenings are usually spent atop a dune, sundowner in hand. The Wolwedans Eco-Village, the headquarters of the operation, is a fascinating insight into life in the desert (where does the water come from?!) and visits can easily be arranged.
