What to do in Langtang Region
Often overlooked in favour of its more famous neighbours, Langtang feels like Nepal's best-kept secret – a valley where the trails are quieter, the mountain views no less spectacular, and the welcome from Tamang villagers genuinely warm. The trekking here winds through ancient forests draped in moss and prayer flags, past yak pastures and cheese factories (yes, really – the yak cheese is surprisingly good), before opening out to panoramas of Langtang Lirung's icy flanks. Keep your eyes peeled for red pandas in the higher forests – sightings are rare but not unheard of – and don't miss the chance to try gundruk, a fermented leafy green that's an acquired taste but tells you everything about mountain resourcefulness. It's proper off-the-beaten-path trekking without sacrificing the creature comforts of tea house lodges along the way.
