A wild and wonderful section of national park for hiking, adventure and unusual flora

Drive east from Plettenberg Bay, past pretty-as-a-picture Keurboomstrand and the heart-stopping Bloukrans Bridge and bungee, and you’ll soon stumble across Tsitsikamma and the village of Storms River. Tsitsikamma is the name given to this section of the Garden Route National Park and encompassing deep ravines and dense forests, roiling rivers and a host of flora that looks as if it belongs on a movie set - think giant Outeniqua trees and orchids and lilies the size of small children - it’s nothing short of spectacular. The 80km coastline is just as remarkable and it’s not unusual to spot dolphins and whales from the shoreline whilst baboons and dassies run amok nearby. Storms River is a few minutes from the entrance to the park and although small, has made its name as a something of an activity hub. It’s here that you can book the zip-lining tree canopy activity, guided hikes, and kayaking tours. If you’d rather tackle Tsitsikamma alone, simply head through the gate and follow one of the well-marked hiking or walking trails; the viewpoint just over the 77-metre suspension bridge at the Storms River mouth is a favourite.

What to do in Storms River & Tsitsikamma National Park

If you like your heart in your mouth and your adrenalin levels somewhere around pumping, you’ll probably feel quite at home in Storms River. Leading the activity charge is Bloukrans, the world’s highest bridge bungee jump at a staggering 216 metres, and only a few minutes by car from Storms River. With zip-lining and the chance to enjoy the Sky Walk underneath the famous bridge, it’s not just for avid bungee-jumpers – but don’t forget your nerves of steel. For something slightly less terrifying, head for the treetop Canopy Tour in the Tsitsikamma Forest and zip around the evergreen canopy on a series of steel cables strung between the trees. Back on land, the adventure doesn’t stop. In this section of the Garden Route National Park, the trees are so big they look otherwordly, and a walk through the forest will lead you past fanciful orchids and enormous lilies, across a 77-metre-long suspension bridge at the yawning Storms River Mouth, past pristine beaches and shy antelope, and even offers the chance of spotting dolphins and whales from the shoreline at the right time of year. Magic personified.

The bottom line is that Timbuktu planned a fabulous trip for us (two first-time travelers to Africa). Things ran very smoothly during our three weeks in Africa, and we enjoyed every stop and accommodation along the way. Our travel agent took the time to speak with us about what we wanted, and her recommendations were detailed and tailored to what we had discussed. She was also clearly knowledgeable about travel to Africa. We initially came to her with one idea for our trip, but she kindly helped us see that it might be a logistical challenge, and she helped us craft an alternative itinerary that met all our goals and desires. The only qualm we had was with some of the communication during the planning process - our agent was lovely, and very helpful, but occasionally failed to respond to us by the deadlines she gave, and did not let us know what was going on when that happened. To be clear, these issues didn't end up impacting our trip, but it did create some concerns (although minor) before we left. Ultimately, though, it was the trip of a lifetime, and we're very grateful for all the planning help we received! We would recommend Timbuktu to others looking to travel to Africa.
