What to do in Ushuaia

Sitting at the southernmost tip of Argentina, Ushuaia is the gateway to Tierra del Fuego, a stunning archipelago where whales of every kind occupy the freezing waters, and hiking trails lead through rugged mountains and icy rivers. A cruise along the Beagle Channel will reveal islands of King penguins, sea lions and aquatic birdlife, and of course, there's the famous lighthouse standing like a sentinel at the 'end of the world'.

Explore Tierra del Fuego National Park

Adventure awaits for every intrepid traveler here. Explore the extensive arteries of trails with hikes to suit all levels, from gentle strolls along coastal paths to treacherous scrambles up rocky inclines. Along the way, take the time to stop and admire the spectacular panoramic views. Mountains dominate the horizon with jagged beauty, reflected in the cool channels, waterways, and pools. Take to the water for boating and kayaking adventures. Some popular highlights that can be found at Tierra del Fuego include Laguna Esmeralda, Acigami Lake, Ensenada Bay, Ovando River, and the Beagle Channel.

Visit Laguna Esmeralda in Tierra Del Fuego

Clear glacial water pools in the Laguna Esmeralda. Because of its natural splendour and tranquility, this is a favourite spot of those visiting Tierra del Fuego. The hike around the lagoon is moderate in difficulty and unmatched in scenery. You'll find indigenous trees and rich vegetation that are the trademark of Patagonian forests. Not to be missed!

Canoe across Patagonian lakes in Ushuaia

This picturesque trail is a 2.1km loop, offering you a moderately challenging hike along the Lapataia River and taking you to the photogenic Acigami Lake. Budget about 40 minutes to complete the trail, but there's no rush. Give yourself the time to stop along the way, admire the spectacular views, and enjoy the tranquility of nature.

Visit picturesque Ensenada Bay in Tierra Del Fuego

The coastal path at Ensenada Bay stretches for around the bay with panoramic views across Beagle Channel to the majestic mountains of Chile beyond. While exploring Tierra del Fuego, don't miss the opportunity to stop here and snap a few photos of the postcard views. You needn't hike the whole path to find rewarding views. Walk along the coastal path or take a hike at nearby Acigami Lake for a change of scenery. For those looking for a different adventure to enrich their experience at Tierra del Fuego National Park, take to the waters and admire the spectacular scenery from a kayak in Lapataia River.

Spy aquatic birds from the Paseo de la Isla trail

Despite its brevity, this short hike yields high rewards. To maximise your time in the Tierra del Fuego, wander on the Paseo de la Isla trail. You will find shore views of both the Ovando River and the Lapataia River. This trail will also give you a great opportunity to spot Patagonian aquatic birds. While you're visiting the Tierra del Fuego, pair this hike with a walk along the coastal path or a visit to Acigami Lake.

Send a postcard from the end of the world

Known as the post office at the end of the world, this is the southern-most active post office in the world. If you're in Ushuaia and visiting the Tierra del Fuego national park, consider adding a stop at this whimsical little outpost to your itinerary. Here, you can buy postcards and send them across the world, complete with a stamp, as a souvenir of your visit to the end of the world.

Take a hike up Glaciar Vinciguerra in Ushuaia

The Vinciguerra Glacier trekking is a full day outing, 14 km round trip and about 2/3 hours of walking uphill, with steep slopes alternating with flat parts. It is an activity of medium difficulty, for which you need to be in good physical condition, you don't need to be an athlete but you need to be able to maintain a constant walking pace, you don't have to go fast but constant. Once the ascent is finished we arrive at the lagoon of the icebergs where you can see the glacier in the background. We continue bordering the lagoon until we reach the glacier. The glacier is in retreat so you can always see different formations on the ice. In the summer season we put on our crampons and helmets and go up to make a mini trekking on the glacier. We have a different view of the place and the glacier, we share a nice moment, take some pictures, eat lunch and return the same way.
