What to do in Waterberg

A striking and scenic corner of South Africa, the rugged wilderness areas of the Waterberg set the scene for a wonderfully low-key safari. Up here, there are relatively few other people, and the game viewing and lodges are exclusive and peaceful. There’s no rushing around either; instead, days are filled with slow but fruitful game drives (morning, afternoon and in some places, evening), leisurely boat trips, horseback safaris and walks, all providing a different perspective on the wildlife and landscapes. At the end of the day, a sundowner surrounded by the ever-changing mountain scenery is the ultimate cherry on top. Wildlife-wise, the Big Five are all present, but the cats can be elusive. There is, however, an excellent population of both black and white rhino, and wild dogs are present in some parks (Madikwe is a good example), but not all. There is plenty of plains game around and the variety of habitats results in several different antelope species including tsessebe, eland and gemsbok, usually only found in much drier northern areas. Off-road driving also aids in the search for wildlife.

Spot wildlife on a Waterberg bush walk

One can often miss the details of the bush—a leopard track in the sand; a rare bird call; or a unique flower—when bumbling in a vehicle. Guided walks are a fantastic way to explore the Waterberg area, with its soaring massif and rolling plains. These can be in the form of a gentle stroll to identify insects and birds - or spot a porcupine quill, track animals through the bush, or learn the medicinal properties of various trees and plants. If you're in the area, your expert guide may take you to see the gallery of San rock paintings dating back thousands of years. Return to camp for a hearty brunch!

Track the Waterberg's wildlife on a game drive

Rumble out of camp in the early morning light or closer to dusk, to explore the Waterberg's landscape of craggy cliffs, crystaline streams and plains dotted with mighty baobabs and leafy fever trees. Your expert guide knows all the right places to look (and in the Waterberg, it won't be far) for members of the Big Five, wallowing hippo and herds of plains game. Stop to take as many mental and real pictures as you can before driving on to spot even more wildlife. After a cuppa or cooling drink, return to home base, eyeing out plenty of animals on the way!

Go on a water safari on the Miss Mara of Marataba

Every morning and afternoon we cruise the Matlabas River's tranquil bends on the Miss Mara Water Safaris, where elephants come to drink.
