What to do in Wilderness
Spoiling, romantic and absolutely beautiful, the word on everyone’s lips in Wilderness is nature - and there are plenty of ways to enjoy it. Beautifully-named hiking trails in the nearby Garden Route National Park offer everything from 3km to 10km routes, steep viewpoints to flatter walks, and strolls on the buttery sands of the coast, so there’s no excuse not to don your hiking boots. There are a number of excellent viewpoints including the Map of Africa for mountain and coastline vistas, and Dolphin's Point where (you guessed it) dolphins are frequent visitors. There’s also Kaaimans River Bridge, a much-visited spot for photographers looking to snap the famous Outeniqua Choo Tjoe as it chugs along the coastline.
If you’re in the market for an adrenalin rush, paragliding, kloofing, mountain biking, water-skiing and windsurfing are all on offer, and between June and October, there’s a good chance of spotting migratory humpback and southern right whales on boat trips.
