An archipelago of tiny, picturesque islands, each one more unique than the last, the Yaeyama Islands are, quite simply, spectacular. Ishigaki is the main hub where flights and ferries operate from, but that doesn’t mean it ranks any lower in the beauty stakes. Head for Kabira Bay where glass-bottomed boats float over the turquoise waters and coral reef. Taketomi Island, on the other hand, is a preserved Ryukyu village with white sand streets and aged houses, best explored by bicycle or water buffalo cart (the buffalo usually know the route better than the driver!). Iriomote Island is almost all jungle and home to the endangered Iriomote wildcat, which was only discovered in 1965 and is found nowhere else on Earth. In fact, natural wonders abound, from ‘star sand’ beaches and disappearing islands, to tumbling falls (only reachable by kayak and a jungle trek) and incredible congregations of manta ray.

The Yaeyama Islands are utterly magical, especially when you’re travelling by water buffalo cart from one island to another, the driver singing and playing sanshin as you go.
Visit Hateruma, Japan’s southernmost inhabited island for some of the clearest skies you’ve ever seen where the stars really put on a show.
Accommodation is thin on the ground in Iriomote and while day trips from Ishigaki are possible, an overnight stay earns you fireflies and stargazing.

Why travel with Timbuktu?
We've been crafting one-of-a-kind journeys since 2014 — over 2,500 trips across 40+ countries, each one built from scratch around your interests and dreams.
Our team only recommends places they've slept in, eaten in, and happily keep going back to. Condé Nast Traveler named 11 of them Top Travel Specialists in 2026, and Travel+Leisure made three A-List Advisors.
Travel+Leisure's readers voted us the World's No.1 Tour Operator in 2024 and No.2 in 2025 — the travel industry's biggest readers' award, judged by people who actually travel.
$50 from every booking goes to female empowerment, tech education, and conservation projects across the countries we love. We have donated $78,000 so far – and it's going up!
Your travel specialist is with you the whole way, dreaming up the trip, building the itinerary, checking you in, and answering the 2am question from the other side of the world..
We are rated 4.9 out of 5 from 995 verified Feefo reviews. And these are the words of people who actually went, not us talking about ourselves.
