Our favourite below-the-radar destinations

Far-flung escapes you might not know about, but really, really, should

In the world of travel, you often see the same names pop up again and again; those iconic destinations that everyone wants to visit (and everyone seems to be talking about!) And while the Masai Mara, Bali and Cartagena are all fabulous, sometimes the magic lies just a little further afield…

At Timbuktu, it’s no secret that one of our favourite pastimes is uncovering (and exploring!) hidden-gem destinations that are authentic and soulful, and where experiences outnumber other visitors.

This week, we asked our travel specialists to share their favourite swaps – and now, here is our insider’s guide to skipping the queues and finding the magic in the world’s most unexpected corners.

Samburu National Reserve, Kenya

“If off-the-beaten-track is your dream, Samburu is the answer. The wildlife is incredible (including the Samburu Special 5, which you won’t find anywhere else) and the views are spectacular. But what really makes it special are the people. The Samburu have a vibrant, authentic culture, which they share warmly with all who visit.” – Annie

Lombok, Indonesia

Lombok is an excellent alternative – or better yet, a perfect complement – to Bali. The quiet beaches and world-class surf breaks, all against the dramatic backdrop of Mount Rinjani, feel far less commercialised than some of its neighbours, but it has no shortage of fabulous accommodation. There’s also a direct flight, making it easier than ever to hop over to the Komodos, too.” – Meg

Kanha National Park, India

Kanha captures the soul of the Indian jungle in a way few places can. Truly off-the-beaten-path, the park is all about quiet, immersive experiences with a strong chance of tiger sightings. What I love most is how raw and untouched it feels – and there are strong ties to the local community as well.” – Carola

Barichara, Colombia

“With its cobblestone streets and white-washed houses draped in blooms, the village of Barichara is one of Colombia’s best-kept secrets. I like to spend my days wandering between little artisan shops, hiking the scenic trails or soaking up amazing views of the Suarez River Canyon – it’s a real escape from the city buzz.” – Joanna

Kafue National Park, Zambia

Kafue is Zambia’s largest national park and for me, the Busanga Plains, hidden in the north, are the highlight. With a large (and growing) predator population, an incredible wetland ecosystem and diverse herbivores, a safari here is all about exploring remote wildernesses and landscapes that will leave you speechless.” – Jonty
