Best hotels in Kenya

Kenya could easily be crowned the king of safaris, and our 423 properties start from around USD 225 per person per night and reach USD 2,200 at the very top. For your very first safari, base yourself in the Masai Mara, where the wildebeest migration pours across the plains and a suspension bridge at Ilkeliani Camp takes you over the Talek River straight into the reserve. Returning visitors head north to Laikipia, where Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages come with your own chef and elephants wandering past the veranda. Families love the Kilimanjaro views of Amboseli & Chyulu Hills, Lake Naivasha makes a gentle stop between parks, and honeymooners finish on Diani Beach. Nearly every route passes through Nairobi, where breakfast at Giraffe Manor comes with giraffes leaning in through the windows for a nibble.

Frequently asked questions

Essential information for travel to Kenya
Stays in Kenya start from around USD 225 per person per night and climb to USD 2,200 at the top end. Laikipia is the priciest corner of the country, while Nairobi, Diani Beach and Lamu Island come in noticeably lower. Safari camps generally cost more than city or coast hotels, so a Masai Mara camp will take a larger share of the budget than the Nairobi nights either side of it.
The Masai Mara offers the widest choice for a Kenya safari, with 132 properties typically priced from USD 445 to USD 1,500 per person per night. Laikipia comes next with 42 properties at USD 600 to 2200, the highest of any safari area, while Amboseli & Chyulu Hills has 23 properties from USD 350 and Tsavo National Park has 20 from USD 300, both gentler on the nightly rate.
Lamu Island and Diani Beach hold most of Kenya's beach hotels. Lamu, off Kenya's north coast, has 26 properties typically priced from USD 155 to 603 per person per night; Diani Beach, south of Mombasa, has 25 properties from USD 165 to 350. Diani's band is the narrower of the two, while Lamu climbs past USD 600 at its smartest end.
For a first safari in Kenya, we'd book Ilkeliani Camp on the Talek River, where a suspension bridge takes you straight into the Masai Mara reserve at dawn, with no queue at the gate. In Laikipia, Ol Pejeta Safari Cottages puts you on the conservancy, home to East Africa's largest black rhino sanctuary, with your own chef. And in Nairobi, breakfast at Giraffe Manor comes with Rothschild giraffes poking their heads through the windows (yes, really).

An Incredible Safari Experience Thanks to Timbuktu Travel

An Incredible Safari Experience Thanks to Timbuktu Travel
October 2026
11 nights in Kenya and Tanzania
We recently returned from an incredible safari through Kenya and Tanzania, and we couldn't be happier with our experience working with Timbuktu Travel. Joanna and her team were wonderful from start to finish. They listened to what we wanted from our safari and designed an itinerary that exceeded our expectations. They helped us prepare for every aspect of the trip, answered our questions along the way, and made sure everything ran seamlessly once we arrived in Africa. From the accommodations and guides to the transfers and overall coordination, everything was exceptionally well organized. We were also celebrating a milestone anniversary, and Joanna and her team went above and beyond to make it special. They arranged anniversary surprises at every stop, including cakes, traditional celebration songs, and even a private dinner. These thoughtful touches made an already amazing trip even more memorable. We also want to recognize Joachim, our private guide for the final four days of our safari. He was friendly, patient, incredibly knowledgeable, and an absolute pleasure to spend time with. He made the final part of our journey particularly enjoyable. The entire experience exceeded our expectations. We saw incredible wildlife, stayed at wonderful camps, and never had to worry about the logistics. Timbuktu took care of everything, allowing us to simply enjoy the adventure. We can't thank Joanna, Joachim, and the entire Timbuktu team enough for creating such an unforgettable experience. We would highly recommend Timbuktu Travel to anyone planning an African safari.
