Fly camping & star beds experiences

If a night under the stars in the African bush isn’t on your bucket list, then add it, pronto! First up is fly camping, the real deal when it comes to night-time bush escapades, with bucket showers, bedrolls, gauzy mosquito nets and an enormous dollop of good, old-fashioned adventure. Prefer a few more creature comforts? A night in a star bed might be just up your street. These alfresco bedrooms take glamping to new oh-so-luxurious levels, with night-time viewings accompanied by champagne, enormous four-posters, and, in the morning, fragrant coffee (of course!).

Gaze into the night sky at Makgadikgadi

The already lunar-like landscape of the Makgadikgadi is the perfect spot to turn your gaze skywards. Leave camp under an inky sky to join an astronomy expert on an evening of star gazing. Dubbed one of the darkest places on the planet, the Makgadikgadi has a glorious view of the star-spangled sky. Hear all about the legends of the constellations and spot the Big Five of the Southern Hemisphere. These include the most dazzling formations from each type of deep-sky class, from nebulas to galaxies! You'll find the clearest nights between April and October when stargazing is out of this world. Return to base for a warming cuppa by the fire!

Sleep under the Tswalu Kalahari stars

Sleep under a canopy of stars in the dry Kalahari air where no light pollution dims their brilliance. The raised sleep-out platform, called Malori or 'dreamer', has a thatched overhang and weather-proof blinds. Here, in a safe environment, you can immerse yourself in the Kalahari and feel the romance of its night skies.

Spend the night fly camping in Samburu

As the sky becomes spangled with stars above Samburu's red landscape, you'll be driven out of camp to find a soft spot for the night. There'll be plenty of time for stargazing and you could even spot the Big Five of the African Sky. You couldn't get closer to nature if you tried and your guide will be there to share the secrets of Kenya's wilderness. After dinner, to the sounds of a crackling fire and the symphony of the bush, curl up in your tent for the ultimate camp-out. The sunrise and birdsong act as your alarm clock before you embark on another full day in Samburu.

Spend the night fly-camping in South Luangwa

Sleeping out in the heart of the bush is an experience like no other
There’s something about sleeping under the stars that’s utterly magical. And a sleep-out safari in the South Luangwa isn’t any old camping! You’ll be spoilt with dinner cooked over the campfire, soak up safari tales told by some of the greatest guides on the continent, then curl up under your mosquito net and nod off to the sounds of the Zambian night. You might just be woken by the sounds of a herd of elephant passing by at midnight, but no need to worry as there is an armed scout on watch throughout the night. The following morning, it’s bacon and eggs with the sunrise and a walking safari back to camp. Fly camping is at its best towards the end of the dry season (July to September) when the temperatures are warmer and there are fewer mosquitoes.

Spend the night fly-camping in Laikipia

As the sky becomes spangled with stars above Laikipia's wild plains, you'll be driven from the lodge to find a soft spot for the night. There'll be plenty of time for stargazing and you could even spot the Big Five of the African Sky! You couldn't get closer to nature if you tried and your guide will be there to share the secrets of Kenya's wilderness. After dinner to the sounds of a crackling fire and the symphony of the bush, curl up in your sleeping bag for the ultimate camp-out. The sunrise and birdsong act as your alarm clock before you embark on another full day in Laikipia.

Learn about the stars in Central Kalahari

The already lunar-like landscape of the Central Kalahari is the perfect spot to turn your gaze skywards. Leave camp under an inky sky to join an astronomy expert on an evening of star gazing. Dubbed one of the darkest places on the planet, the Kalahari has a glorious view of the star-spangled sky. Hear all about the legends of the constellations and spot the Big Five of the Southern Hemisphere. These include the most dazzling formations from each type of deep-sky class, from nebulas to galaxies! You'll find the clearest nights between April and October when stargazing is out of this world.
