About Awasi Atacama

Built in the image of Pre-Incan ruins, Awasi belongs in the desert yet feels like home.
11,000 years ago, the Atacama Desert was inhabited by hunter-gatherers, who then became the shepherds that once lived behind Awasi's ancient adobe walls. When the hotel was built, it stayed true to this legacy: the 12 suites are inspired by nearby Pre-Incan ruins and many of its dishes are prepared with ingredients that only grow in the wilds of the region. Beyond Awasi's walls lies one of the most scenic and surreal places in Chile, where unique wildlife wanders between the desert flora, and the moonlike landscape can be explored on foot, bicycle and horseback. If you thought it couldn't get any better, each suite comes with its own guide and 4WD vehicle!

Property details

The property

Almost entirely constructed with adobe, wood and stone, the lodge is 100% carbon neutral - even your travel emissions are taken care of. Apart from a few cosy lounges, the main areas are alfresco to make the most of sunny days in the pool and starry nights around the firepit. The Relais & Chateaux restaurant has no set menu but uses fresh, local ingredients to present a 'little piece of the desert' on your plate at every meal. Look out for the chef's signature chanar fruit-infused desserts, and don't miss out on a cooking lesson.

The rooms

Recreated in the image of Pre-Incan ruins by a local historian, there are a dozen circular thatch and adobe suites, which remain cool during the day and keep you toasty at night. The interiors are decorated in striped textiles, alpaca blankets and earthy colours, and amenities include temperature control, a mini bar and hairdryer. There are 10 superior suites, which feature a private solarium, outdoor shower and spacious bathroom with a tub and walk-in closet, while all suites have indoor showers.

Activities

The Atacama Desert is an extraordinary setting where geysers blow towards the sky, salt lakes shimmer and deep canyons prickle with a sense of adventure. Led by your private guide, you'll visit the geographical oddities of this area, from the colourful Tara Salt Flat to Moon Valley. There are plenty of ways to do so as well, including horseback rides, cycling, hiking, mountain biking and comfortable drives. Look out for the desert's amazing wildlife, from flamingos and Horned Tagua to cougars (found wherever guanacos are).
