Picture yourself on a quiet island, no-one around to disturb you, pristine beaches lapped by azure waters, and a thatched cottage to rest your head every night... Well, that's Barefoot at Havelock down to a tee! It might be a resort but put all thoughts of luxury hotels from your mind: this is for those looking for true island adventure. Much of the time, the island itself takes centre stage and guests are welcomed to appreciate its beauty whilst also protecting it from harm. Rainwater is harvested, everything is built from indigenous materials, and vegetables are grown organically on the surrounding land. The saying 'take only photos and leave only footprints', really does apply here.

The property

The central meeting point for Barefoot at Havelock is the restaurant, The Swimming Elephant, and the bar, The Dugong Dugon lounge. At the former you can expect local cuisine and fresher-than-fresh seafood, whilst the latter is the perfect spot to relax with a sundowner at the end of the day. There's also the onsite OMA Spa which offers dreamy Ayurvedic treatments to help ease you of any remaining cares.

The rooms

There are 31 cottages and villas in total, each built and decorated traditionally and totally in sync with the tropical foliage. In fact, it's only their distinctive conical roofs that give away any form of construction. The thatched Nicobari Cottages are the most rustic but still wonderfully stylish, whilst the Andaman Villas are a touch more modern - and solid! There's also a beautiful cottage with an upstairs, afresco terrace. Our tip? Plump for one with air conditioning to ward of hot nights.

Activities

You might be enjoying some time on a blissfully-quiet island but there's plenty to keep you busy. The scuba diving is truly world-class and even if you don't fancy going down to the depths, snorkelling, boating and kayaking will reveal a host of beautiful fish and marine life. The hotel also has a traditional dunghi (long-tailed boat), perfect for beach-hopping and secret cove-finding. Head into the hills on a nature walk for a spot of wildlife and incredible views, and finish it all off with an hour or two of yoga - or a massage!
