About Belmond Hotel das Cataratas

The only hotel in the park, this is the place to soak up the majesty of Iguaçú Falls.
A vision in soft pink, the Hotel das Cataratas was built in 1958, and still embodies a certain type of vintage glamour. It also happens to be the only hotel within the Iguaçú National Park, its lush lawns sloping down towards a lookout over the tumbling, roaring falls. Taller than Niagara and wider than Victoria Falls, Cataratas do Iguaçu are a wonder to behold whether it's while exploring rainforest paths or on a speedboat ride to the thunderous base. When you're not marvelling at the falls, dine amongst the palm, mango and apricot trees as toucans shrike overhead, or head to the rainforest spa and harness the healing energies of the falls.

Property details

The property

The hotel has a host of dining options with the likes of grilled tilapia or a classic feijoada served alfresco, creative regional dishes concocted by their award-winning chef, or global cuisine served on a balcony overlooking the falls. At the Y Bar, enjoy re-imagined Brazilian cocktails, or head for Bar Taroba for drinks with sensational sunset views over the falls. For the ultimate vista, though, head to the tower for champagne and canapes at sunset – it's the highest point in the park.

The rooms

With their dark wood furnishings and hardwood floors, the rooms are classic and warm, yet with a fresh touch thanks to the locally-commissioned artworks of the flora and fauna. The rooms and suites range in size and amenities, with the latter enjoying a king-size bed and large balcony, while some also have a private pool. The bathrooms are beautifully done in traditional azulejos (painted tiles) and marble accents. A number of rooms also boast full views of the falls – we'd definitely opt for one of those.

Activities

Of course, the Iguaçú Falls will be your main focus. Wander along forested routes to viewpoints like the Devil's Throat lookout, soar overhead on a helicopter flight or enjoy a Macuco Safari by boat to the base of the falls. The hotel also offers more niche activities like a guided energy exploration of the falls (including scientific explanations of its power), stargazing with an expert astronomer, lunar rainbow walks (available at full moon), and Parana wine tastings. In your down time, be sure to head for the delightful rainforest spa.

Something to think about

The rooms may feel a tad cramped, so we would opt for one of the roomier suites instead.
