The colonial mansion's lovely butter-coloured, gabled facade, flanked by large trees, faces the street. Steps and a covered porch lead to the entrance. Indoors, Benjamin’s full and fabulous breakfast (included) is served in the conservatory-style restaurant, which opens to the sidewalk. (Lunch and high tea can be arranged too.) After sightseeing, relax in the courtyard garden and patio area, with umbrellas, tables and chairs, and a long lap pool. There's a conference room too, should you be visiting on business.
Rooms are scattered throughout this former mansion in a way that makes it seem like there are fewer than forty-one. Each is individually decorated in a clean, classic style, with bright cushions and throws and, most importantly, deeply welcoming mattresses. You won't find too many idiosyncrasies here – just consistent comfort. All the rooms have en-suite bathrooms and are equipped with air-conditioning, satellite TV, wi-fi, and power points located at a desk.
Durban has it all, from the warm Indian Ocean to the lively city centre. Wander through local markets (Victoria Street Market is a must, with its towers of fragrant spices and miles of exotic fabrics), and investigate traditional healing remedies and potions at the sidewalk stalls. Drive to nearby uShaka Marine World, the fifth-largest aquarium on Earth, for a glimpse into the rich underwater landscape, and some adrenalin-spiking waterslides for the brave. The local restaurant culture is sublime.
Visit the quirky city for unique cafes, aromatic curries, pretty beaches and a dose of sunshine.
