Perched on a spiky promontory, the Modi River rushing below, Birethanti Lodge is the lowest lodge on the Annapurna circuit and an excellent start or end point to a trekking adventure. The suspension bridge entrance, draped with prayer flags, sets the tone beautifully while marigold-filled gardens and their resident butterflies remind you that opting for comfort doesn't mean sacrificing authenticity. Inside, you'll find handcrafted rooms with properly hot showers, and in the evening, communal dinners where trekkers swap tales over hearty meals grub. And outside, that sacred Fishtail Mountain practically poses for photos at sunrise...

Cross the prayer flag-festooned bridge and you'll find a lodge that hums with life. The central dining area is the heart of operations, especially in the evening when trekkers gathering round the fireplace for happy hour before tucking into traditional fare for dinner. Hand-built by local craftsmen, the common spaces blend traditional Nepalese architecture with surprising comforts like WiFi and a modest library. Afternoon tea appears at 4:30 sharp, Ayurvedic massages soothe tired muscles, and the gardens burst with marigolds and poinsettias.
The 18 rooms are crafted by local artisans and offer more comfort than you might expect at this altitude. Each comes with its own bathroom (not always a given on the trekking circuit), twin beds with quality linens, and electric blankets for those chilly mountain nights. The lodge even provides down jackets, fleece hats and gloves for guests. Hot water flows reliably, though solar power means evening showers run hottest. These rooms excel at what matters: warmth, comfort, and glorious mountain views from bed.
Mornings kick off with steaming tea on the lawn as Machapuchare catches the first light, followed by hearty porridge before the day's adventures. Easy walks into Birethanti village reveal unchanged rural life, while the surrounding subtropical forests attract botanists and birders alike. Watch colourful mule trains clatter across the suspension bridge, or tackle moderate 4-6 hour hikes to neighbouring lodges on the circuit. The Modi Khola Valley begs exploration, though many guests find themselves perfectly content simply soaking up the riverside serenity between treks.
The sunrise tea ritual on the lawn with Machapuchare glowing pink above – worth setting that alarm for.
Despite feeling wonderfully remote, there's actually a road nearby for emergencies. Perfect peace of mind without spoiling the wilderness atmosphere.
Rooms are cosy rather than spacious, and hot water runs strongest in the evenings when the solar panels have done their work – time your showers accordingly!
