At the heart of camp (wherever it's been set up for the night) is the communal mess tent. It's an open-sided, Meru-style structure in which most meals are served around a large table lit in the evening with candles and lanterns. The separate open-sided lounge tent is furnished with rugs and sofas. Hammocks are also strung about, when possible. And the inevitable fireplace, set beneath the open sky for evening stargazing, is the best place to be after the action.
Tents come in three styles – dome, mini-Meru and classic Meru. Dome tents are the most basic, although still luxurious by camping standards, 3x3 metres in size, with twin beds and a open-air (but private) bathroom with bucket shower and toilet. Slightly larger, the mini-Meru tents have a bigger bathroom. Classic Meru tents are largest, their bathrooms featuring water on tap, over-sized bucket showers and flush loos, and, luxury of luxuries, a dedicated host, who will wake you with coffee.
Activities depend on the season and the destination – each of Capture Africa's mobile safaris has been tailored to experience the best of Botswana's varied regions. For example, a safari in Xai Xai, near the Namibian border, means intimate encounters with the Joan/Huansi Bushmen – the area's original inhabitants. A journey through the southern delta means negotiating its hugely varied ecosystems, navigating past hippo, elephant and crocodile in the waterways, and seeing lion, leopard, giraffe and rhino on land.
