About Chitabe Camp

Known for all-round safari excellence

Chitabe camp is the larger of two sister camps situated in the private Chitabe Reserve on the eastern side of the Okavango Delta. Mostly a dry camp with sporadic seasonal flooding, this camp is known for its diversity and abundance of both habitats and wildlife, particularly predators. Exclusive access by light aircraft only adds to the wild feel of this island camp. The area offers a huge diversity of habitats within close proximity, and as such, a diversity of species. Besides diversity, Chitabe is most renowned for its wild dogs which are the stars of Running Wild, a book authored by the camp’s owners.

Property details

The property

The main area is a thatched structure built on raised platforms amongst the woodland. Big, soft seating areas invite you to recline in comfort, while the characterful bar beckons thirsty adventurers. The lounge and bar area connects to an open-sided dining area that overlooks the plains. The outdoor fire is the perfect spot to warm your bones, while the pool promises refreshment. The most notable feature is the way in which the trees have been incorporated into the space, particularly with the library which is nestled into the branches of a tree.

The rooms

Chitabe Camp consists of eight en-suite tented rooms evenly spaced out and connected by raised wooden platforms. Each tent has its own unique flavour, enhanced through the vibrant, Africhic decor. You can choose between an indoor or star-lit outdoor shower with a view. The large glass sliding doors make the most of the views, as does the wicker furniture on your private Delta viewing deck, where you can watch the wildlife wander by.

Activities

Although no water activities are offered, guests can look forward to day and night game drives in this private concession. Bush walks are offered but are subject to availability of guides. If you are able to take one, you will discover that it is an extra special way to encounter Africa’s greatest wilderness, complete with all her hidden treasures and subtle magic. A timeless winner is an indulgent candle-lit dinner out in the bush, under the star-studded African sky. It’s an experience unmatched by even the best restaurants in the world.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The extraordinary predator density — with resident wild dogs, over 50 leopards on record, and regular cheetah sightings, this is one of the Delta's most rewarding camps for serious wildlife enthusiasts.
