About Clarkes Hotel

Travel back to the time of the British Raj at this Grand Heritage Hotel.
Located in the Western Himalayan retreat of Shimla, Clarke's is a memory of times past. Originally owned by a British couple, the property was bought by Mr Mohan Singh Oberoi in 1934, who then went on to found one of India's largest hotel empires (recognise the name?). The characterful hotel retains many of its original features and a stay here will not only settle you in the heart of Shimla, but it will take you back to the days where it was a cool summer escape in the era of the British Raj.

Property details

The property

Clarke's Hotel is located within walking distance of all Shimla's main attractions; the railway station, Gaiety Theatre, Gorton Castle and Rothney Castle are just a stone's throw away. The hotel itself maintains the feel of the colonial home it once was, showcasing the elegance of earlier times in its architecture. On colder days enjoy delicious dinners in the dining hall, and in the summer warmth take your meals alfresco on the terrace.

The rooms

There are 32 rooms to choose from at Clarke's ranging from superior, premier and deluxe, to the beautiful suites. The deciding factor in the first three is the view you'd like - the superior rooms have no views, premier look out either onto Mall Road or a small section of the Shimla Valley, and deluxe rooms afford a more impressive view of the landscape. The suites each come with a living room, a King size bed and partial views of the beautiful valley below.

Activities

The main draw (if we haven't made it clear) is the spectacular location. If you're staying here we recommend exploring Shimla on foot and discovering all the nooks and crannies the town has to offer. If you want to relax at the hotel, you can challenge your travelling buddy to a game of table tennis, badminton or basketball.

The building dates way back to 1898 so be sure to pick the brains of hotel staff to find out more about the history.

Whilst the history of this hotel is wonderful, some touches can feel a little dated.
