The lobby sets the scene with a model replica of the old, 'Batavia', and nautical charts on the walls. Dutch influence is seen throughout the hotel's design and in the East Indies restaurant, which serves up a fusion of old and new. Be sure to try their Dutch specialty - bruder bread! Enjoy meals in the casual dining room or out on the grassy terrace where local musicians play in the evening. Take a dip in the pool or relax on the shaded loungers in the courtyard.
In shades of mustard and red, the rooms at Eighth Bastion have king-size or twin beds and en-suite bathrooms decorated in mosaic. A selection of rooms come with a garden veranda and sunken bath while others have floor-to-ceiling glass doors opening onto a private terrace with views of the colourful rooftops (and a slice of sea). Each room has tea/coffee facilities, a safe, TV and air con if you don't fancy letting the sea air in.
Cochin is a city of museums, art galleries and tonnes of character. Visit the Dutch Palace with its historic architecture and impressive art collection, and while you're there, head down to Mattancherry Market with the fragrant air of its many spice shops. The Indian Naval Maritime Museum provides a fascinating snapshot of India's history at sea. The Chinese Fishing Nets is one of Cochin's must-see landmarks and the docks aren't a bad place to watch the sunset!
A laidback port city packed with history, culture and razzmatazz and more than worthy of a wander.
