Encantes Do Nordeste

Back on land, you’ll find a palm-shaded swimming pool, a bar that keeps the caipirinhas flowing and a laid-back “Zen space” for massages and meditation. Lounging is practically mandatory, whether in slouchy sofas or riverside hammocks. Just a short stroll away, the Bambaê restaurant serves regional Brazilian dishes with knockout river views — a favourite of locals and travellers alike.

Dotted among the gardens are 27 chalets, built from natural materials like carnaúba palm and local wood. All are air-conditioned, with rustic-chic interiors and (in many cases) private verandas complete with hammocks, best enjoyed with a cold beer in hand. Families can spread out in the larger Eco Apartments, while the top-tier Superior Chalets add excellent extras like hot tubs for two. Expect simple, comfortable style that suits the laid-back spirit of Maranhão.

Encantes do Nordeste is ideally placed for exploring Lençóis Maranhenses in all its shifting, seasonal glory. Head out on 4x4 excursions to swim in the famous Blue and Beautiful lagoons, hike across the dunes or take eco-tours through the famous landscapes that transform with the rains. From the dock, boat trips follow the Rio Preguiças to the Mandacaru lighthouse, the sandy spit of Caburé, or the fishing villages of Atins and Vassouras. Sailing, kayaking and other river adventures can be arranged too, but really, just drifting along with the current is half the joy.
