Entre Hielos Lodge

Built entirely from honey-coloured Guaitecas Cypress, the hotel lounges are often aglow with firelight and offer the perfect setting for diving into the collection of books or admiring the many photographs on the walls. Cooked by a chef during the summer and Maria throughout the rest of the year, traditional Patagonian dishes are served in the intimate dining room. Every ingredient is locally sourced including the breakfast preserves, which are made on-site. For something different, try the spit-roasted barbecue, washed down with a craft beer.

There are just six rooms at Entre Hielos, furnished simply but snugly with double or twin bed complete with goose feather duvets and wool blankets, hand-woven wall hangings, and baskets to hold your clothes. Huge, unbarred windows reveal an incredible view over the jungles of Caleta Tortel. Each room has an en-suite bathroom with wood and glass showers, and neat amenities. The rooms are all kept comfortable with central heating too. The hotel has scheduled hours without electricity and TVs aren't a feature.

Located between the North and South Ice Fields, Caleta Tortel is a fairytale town with adventure on the doorstep. You'll have the chance to explore multiple glaciers, from treks below hanging ice monoliths to boat rides stopping at the Jorge Mont Glacier where you can enjoy a whisky with 'ice'. There are plenty of rainforest hiking trails too, snaking between rushing waterfalls and verdant birdlife, as well as kayaking expeditions to the marble caves. If you'd prefer something more sedate, stroll through the village and just take in the atmosphere.
