Estancia Rincón Chico

The estancia prides itself on being environmentally sustainable (solar panels and windmills – tick). Modelled on the original 19th-century farmhouse, the main area is a glorious mix of items collected by the family over the years including antique tools, framed maps, seashells and books. The dining room and lounge are simple and homely with a crackling open fireplace and views across the vast, arid steppe. At meal times you'll enjoy family recipes and Patagonian dishes including hearty stews and barbecued lamb, all accompanied by delicious Argentine wines.

One of the most exclusive estancias in the region, there are just eight rooms at Rincón Chico, all decorated in warm, earthy textiles with shuttered windows and polished hardwood floors. Each has king or twin beds, and a neat en-suite bathroom with a large tub. In keeping with its ethos, there are no TVs but we'd be surprised if you miss one. All rooms open onto a shared veranda, where you can enjoy stargazing against the pristine Patagonian skies.

Most activities at the estancia are focused on conservation and giving guests the chance to experience the work of the foundation firsthand. This begins with the astounding wildlife of the region and you'll have the chance to spot southern right whales and orcas, sea lions, elephant seals, dolphins and penguins on foot, horseback and by boat, sometimes coming within a few feet of them. Along the way, your guide will tell you all about the important projects that ensure the protection of the fragile ecosystem. You can also enjoy a day with local gauchos (cowboys) to learn about their traditional way of life.
