About Expeditions Camp

Canvas, firelight, and a four-poster in the wildest corner of the Delta.

Pitched deep in NG12 — a 90,000-hectare sprawl of northern Okavango — Expeditions Camp is the brainchild of third-generation guide Ralph Bousfield, and it shows. Eight Meru tents sit directly on the forest floor (no raised decks, no frills) beneath ebony trees and facing a seasonal floodplain. The aesthetic is 1920s expedition with four-posters draped with mosquito nets, Persian rugs over levelled sand, bone-handled silver cutlery, and a well-stocked drinks cabinet that seems to refill itself. It's lightly nostalgic without overdoing it, rather letting the Delta do all the talking.

Property details

The property

The camp holds true to the ideals of safari legend Jack Bousfield’s original camps, so instead of frills and fluff, you'll discover some serious style and comfort. In the mess tent, sink into slouchy leather sofas with a book, or pull up a canvas chair and settle down for a siesta and wildlife watching. Sumptuous three-course dinners cooked on the fire are enjoyed under the stars, accompanied by the finest wines and the freshest of bread (baked in the ground!).

The rooms

Eight semi-permanent Meru tents (three double, five twin) are each pitched on levelled sand rather than a timber deck — which puts you eye-level with whatever happens to wander through. Inside, you'll find four-poster beds under billowing mosquito netting, campaign-style writing desks, brass lamps, rich textiles, and sumptuous Persian rugs. The en-suite bathrooms are fully plumbed with hot water, a flush loo and an indoor shower (no bucket bathing). A private deck opens onto the floodplain — the best seat in the house for a coffee.

Activities

Game drive across the plains, admiring the Okavango's iconic scenery and wildlife, or drift along the maze of waterways in a traditional mokoro. Walking safaris reveal the finer details of the landscape, from the ecology of the waters to the most important components of the ecosystem. All the guides here are qualified biologists, with a minimum of two years guiding experience in the Kalahari, and their knowledge of this pristine wilderness is unrivalled. And remember: because the camp is exclusively yours, it’s up to you how you spend your days…

What you'll love

What you'll love

The food in the camp is something to write home about – think fresh tomato and basil soup, ostrich piccata, roast Botswana beef and the most delectable orange tarts, all in the middle of nowhere!

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Ask the team about a heli excursion to Tsodilo Hills — a UNESCO site holding 4,500-plus pieces of San rock art, some of it 24,000 years old, and almost no visitors to share it with. The flight in over the Delta is worth the fare on its own, and a morning there is a proper palate-cleanser between game drives.

Something to think about

Something to think about

During February and March, the camp is properly closed so you'll need to factor that into your plans.
