A boutique safari lodge with a plethora of luxury touches, an emphasis on sustainable tourism, where activities include wildlife-watching, yoga and Ayurvedic treatments? It might sound too good to be true, but such a place really does exist. It's called the Flame of the Forest Safari Lodge, a small but perfectly formed property with just four luxury cottages, allowing for totally personalised service and freedom to do exactly what you want, when you want. And considering it's setting in the lovely Kanha National Park, that will undoubtedly include the chance to search for India's most famous cat - the tiger.

The property

This boutique bolthole might be small but it certainly has everything you need for a relaxing safari stay. Sit around the campfire each night, sharing stories and nibbling freshly-made snacks, before enjoying a dinner of local delicacies. During the day, it's all about practising yoga as you take in the spectacular view, perusing the book collection in the library, and unwinding with a massage in the spa.

The rooms

There are just four cottages to choose from here and you'll appreciate that keeping it small has meant there is an incredible attention to detail. Each is built in a traditional local style and linked by a matrix of walkways and bridges, usually scattered with an array of monkeys and birds. Inside, cottages are decorated simply but very stylishly and offer views of the river from private courtyards and verandas. All have both indoor and outdoor showers, and there are daybeds outside, which can be turned into night-beds for snoozing under the stars if you so wish.

Activities

You'll likely have come in search of the incredible local wildlife (hello, Bengal tigers) and twice daily safaris in Kanha will certainly satisfy that itch. Also on offer are yoga classes, cooking lessons and an Ayurvedic Spa with a range of relaxing and wonderfully-dreamy oil massages. One of the main concepts of the lodge is to be as environmentally and socially aware as possible, and there is plenty of opportunity to engage with the local community on tribal village walks and guided hikes through the forests too.
