About Heckfield Place

A Georgian estate in Hampshire that takes the farm-to-table idea more seriously than most.

Plonked in the middle of 400 acres of private Hampshire countryside, Heckfield Place is handsome, historic and really very cool. Less than an hour from Heathrow, it's close enough to London for a long weekend, but far enough away to feel like you're properly "in the countryside." And in fact, Heckfield really is its own world, dictated less by check-in times and more by the seasons and the biodynamic farm at its heart that supplies most of the (extraordinary) food in the two restaurants. Choose Marle with its Michelin Green Star, or the old-stable block, Hearth and prepare to be blown away. You won't have any problem decompressing here, but you just might struggle to leave.

Property details

The property

The stunning Georgian house has been restored with a light hand and the original fireplaces and sash windows are all intact. The interiors, however, are Vogue-worthy and incredibly stylish, all neutral tones and rich fabrics. Restaurant-wise, Heckfield shines. Marle occupies the main dining room, its terrace facing the pretty grounds; Hearth, the open-fire restaurant for guests only, is in a converted stable, all flagstone floors and sheepskin rugs - but head to the Moon Bar with its midnight-blue walls, marble fireplace and disco ball first. Outside, walled gardens and wildflower meadows stretch across your eyeline and there's a beautiful six-room spa for ultimate R&R.

The rooms

Six room types, ranging from the Friends Rooms - smaller, corridor-facing and simply furnished - to the Signature Rooms with serious space and sweeping views of the manicured grounds. The Ochre Room is the pick for a special occasion with its emperor bed, west lawn views and a magncifent marble bathroom. There are also two cottages within the estate grounds those looking for a touch more privacy. Characterfu lChurch Lodge, a timbered gatehouse, is our favourite and comes with its own walled garden.

Activities

The estate has enough walking routes to fill several days, plus falconry, cold-water immersion and farm tours that trace the biodynamic growing cycle from soil to plate. The Bothy Spa - 17,000 square feet, leave your phones at the door! - has a chlorine-free pool whose glass wall opens onto the grounds when the weather permits. Jane Austen's house at nearby Chawton is also worth an afternoon but most find the walled gardens reason enough to stay put.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The farm grows everything to a lunar calendar, meaning produce is harvested according to the cycle of the moon. It sounds eccentric, but you can taste the difference on the plate.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Ask to be taken out in Chamomile, the hotel's beloved 1950s Morris Minor. It's used for estate tours and is an utterly charming way to explore the grounds.

Something to think about

Something to think about

Midweek, the hotel can feel short on atmosphere but it fills up at weekends and operates as a very different place. If a lively atmosphere matters to you, aim for a Friday or Saturday arrival (or the opposite!).
