About Hintok River Camp

A rustic camp set in the heart of the area's turbulent history
History buffs hoping to learn more about Thailand's poignant past will find themselves well-placed at Hintok River Camp, set close to the infamous Hellfire Pass. The traditional tented camps might be simple, but they'll transport you back in time with their white canvas frames and decks to lounge on. The area is an interesting place to spend a few days, whether you're relaxing in the natural pool, soaking up the history, or exploring the nearby areas of jungle beauty. And the hotel is a peaceful spot to return to and gather your thoughts after a day absorbing stories of the Death Railway.

Property details

The property

The camp is fairly rustic in terms of offerings, but it has everything you'll need. All meals are served in the main restaurant or enjoyed at tables scattered outside, and when the weather allows, BBQ campfire suppers under the stars are a real treat. There's no spa but you can request a traditional Thai massage if the mood takes you, and the natural pool is heaven after a busy day. Oh, and the best views are from the reception area if you'd like somewhere quiet to gaze at the river.

The rooms

Pared-back white canvas tents provide the perfect spot to rest your head after a long day of history buffing. Each tent enjoys its own private bathroom at the back (with hot running water), a private deck to relax on (although the rooms do face inwards towards each other), air-conditioning and a torch in case you lose your way at night.

Activities

The main drawcard here is the proximity to the poignant history of this area and all who visit are encouraged to explore Hellfire Pass and learn about the PoW who built the infamous railway, and delve deeper into its tragic past. There are also plenty of non-history related activities to occupy your time; canoeing or bamboo rafting down the river, visiting the Lawa Caves, taking in the beautiful local waterfalls, and visiting the local villages to learn about the Mon people's way of life.

What you'll love

You might not be able to swim in this area of the River Kwai, but the natural pool at the hotel more than makes up for it.

Take a boat trip to one of the areas most famous sights - the bridge over the river Kwai, and walk across it yourself.

The accommodations here are definitely on the simpler end of the scale, but all the better to connect with the surrounding environment.
