Loosely translated to mean 'merry hill', so named for the bright flower displays that adorned its houses in the 19th century, Cerro Alegre is a historic and very picturesque quarter in Valpariaso - and with its vermillion exteriors trimmed in white, the Hotel Palacio Astoreca fits right in to this 'postcard come to life', picturesque theme! Outwardly, the hotel's appearance is reminiscent of a bygone time, but step inside and you'll find contemporary artworks and comforts like the very atmospheric spa. The property

The decor is from a different era entirely, taking inspiration from the 50s, 60s and 70s, and is a real treat for design lovers. The library is a lovely spot to enjoy a book or board game in front of the fire, whilst the bar boasts white moulded ceilings and a grand piano - look out for the live music evenings. The restaurant has a monochrome design, and is home to a delectable breakfast spread in the morning and, later on, seafood and traditional Chilean dishes. And be sure to visit the terrace for the best views at sunset.

The rooms

Rooms have parquet floors and pristine, white interiors, brightened by a bold feature wall and statement lamps. The beds sit on chunky wooden platforms and are topped with fine linens and cosy throws. Tall windows let in plenty of natural light and the small sitting areas have views of the city; deluxe rooms also have a private terrace. The bathrooms are compact but beautifully-decorated and have all the amenities you'll need - and some even have clawfoot tubs. The macarons left at turn-down are a welcome touch!

Activities

The hotel is only a short walk away from the famous Yugoslav Promenade, where you can take in the bright city views and stop off at the Baburizza Palace, which houses the Museum of Beaux Arts. Stroll along the quaint, cobbled streets or ride one of the historic elevators (built in 1883) to the harbour for a little lesson in the city's maritime history and a bite to eat. The, head back to the hotel for a dip in the plunge pool or the alfresco, wood-fired hot tub.
