About Karenge Bush Camp

Canvas comfort with a conscience on Rwanda's endless Kilala Plain.
The name says it all, really - 'small footprint' in Kinyarwanda, which rather neatly sums up this camp's entire philosophy. With just seven canvas tents for a maximum of 16 guests, Karenge achieves that increasingly rare thing: genuine intimacy in the wilderness without sacrificing comfort. Perched on the edge of the vast Kilala Plain with the Muhororo Hills providing a dramatic backdrop, it's the sort of place where you can actually hear yourself think - assuming the resident wildlife gives you a moment's peace. The camp's commitment to solar power and minimal environmental impact means you're experiencing the bush much as it was intended, with just enough modern comfort to keep things civilised. Karenge is closed in April each year due to rainfall-related inaccessibility.

Property details

The property

The main dining tent strikes the perfect balance between communal and cosy, with a lounge area that encourages that pre-dinner drink ritual while you watch the plain transform in the golden light. The outdoor firepit becomes the evening's focal point, surrounded by chairs positioned to make the most of those sweeping views across the Kilala Plain. Everything runs on solar power, from the lighting to the charging points, which adds to the sense of being properly disconnected from the modern world while still having access to the essentials.

The rooms

Seven canvas tents that can be configured as twins or doubles, each positioned to maximise privacy and those spectacular plain views. The ensuite bathrooms are surprisingly luxurious for a bush camp, with proper flushing toilets and reliable hot water - small mercies that become rather large comforts when you're this far from civilisation. The private outdoor showers are the real treat, offering the chance to wash while watching the landscape wake up or wind down. Each tent has its own charging station with USB and power points, because even in the wilderness, someone needs to keep their camera battery alive.

Why we love it

Why we love it

The outdoor showers, which somehow manage to make you feel simultaneously pampered and wonderfully exposed to the elements - there's something rather liberating about washing under the African sky with nothing but canvas walls for company.
Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

The evening firepit sessions are when the camp truly comes alive. With such small numbers, conversations flow naturally between guests, guides, and staff, often leading to those travel stories you'll be boring friends with for years to come.
Something to think about

Something to think about

This is bush camping refined rather than luxury lodge polished - if you need marble bathrooms and room service, you're probably in the wrong place. Also worth noting: no children under six, which keeps things peaceful but might disappoint families with little ones.
