About Macatoo Camp

Canter past wildlife as you splash through the Okavango's reed-lined waterways.

If you are a good rider and want to see the Okavango Delta, Macatoo Horseback Safari Camp is the place to go. Leave the comfortable tented camp with your experienced guide and trot off into one of Africa’s prime wildlife areas. From your saddle, high above the long grass and reeds, you'll see giraffe, elephant, buffalo, many antelope species and even lion. This is a once-in-a-lifetime experience and, even if you're not a horserider, exploring the Delta by boat or in a safari vehicle is just as rewarding.

Property details

The property

Despite its remote location, this is a laid-back but perfectly comfortable and well-appointed camp. The tented main area has inviting seating, and the stables and their nearly 50 inhabitants are well maintained. Fireside dinners are generally served beneath the stars, with freshly prepared and very good wholesome meals. (Food preferences are requested when you book.) There's a swimming pool for hot afternoons, with a pool deck and sun beds overlooking the floodplain, where elephants and giraffe come close and baboons use it as a watering hole.

The rooms

Macatoo's eight tents each sit on their own raised platform, so the floodplain view starts from the bed and carries on out to the deck. Configurations run from doubles to twins to triples, and the family and friends suite links two tents by a raised walkway and viewing deck — handy for parents with children, or anyone who'd rather not sleep alone in the bush. The honeymoon tent adds a private dining deck and a raised double tub bath looking out over the water. All have proper beds, cotton sheets and blankets for the cold months, en-suite showers with hot and cold running water and a flush loo. No aircon. Each morning you're woken with tea or coffee to drink while the floodplain comes to life in front of you.

Activities

This is an area of dangerous game, so you need to be an experienced rider to be able to keep up with the group (and your competent guide) and control your horse when riding fast over rough terrain. Beginner riders are not accepted. There's lots for non-riders to do though – boat trips, fishing and mokoro or game drives dependent on the water levels.

Why we love it

Why we love it

Riding puts you inside the delta, not looking at it — giraffe and elephant carry on as if you belong there.

Insiders tip

Insiders Tip

Take binoculars to the pool deck. Elephant and giraffe come close, and baboons treat the pool as their own watering hole.

Something to think about

Something to think about

This is serious riding in an area with dangerous game, so the entry bar is high and non-negotiable; no novices, 12+, 95kg limit, own hard hat, and insurance covering riding and medical evacuation.
