About Magashi Camp

Replenished and revitalised, Rwanda's Akagera National Park is a real jewel
Rwanda may be small, but its big-hearted conservation policies are pioneering the charge on the continent. Revitalised Akagera National Park is its latest offering. Founded in 1934, the park's wildlife (including 250 lions) was plundered during the civil war of the '90s. Afterwards, returning refugees repopulated the space with cattle. Today, thanks to African Parks, Akagera is being reborn – lions are thriving, as are the rest of the Big Five. Brand-new Magashi Camp, on the shores of Lake Rwanyakazinga, is currently the only lodge in the northern sector of the park. Visit to experience utter remoteness, and great wildlife.

Property details

The property

The open-sided main area makes the most of its Lake Rwanyakzinga views with an extended elevated deck that wraps around the lake shore. The flow between indoors and out is exceptional, and so appealing, because your eyes are immediately drawn to any movement in the wilderness. The furnishings are modern in an updated classic safari style – natural woods and leather, and very elegant. There are a few intimate seating areas, a central bar, and a chandelier-lit dining room.

The rooms

Six tents (plus two private guides' tents) are reached via elevated pathways on either side of the main lodge. All are furnished with a combination of traditional elements (picture Rwandan imigongo murals) and contemporary flair. This is safari-chic at its best. Gauzy netting drapes the enormous beds at the centre of the rooms; and two entire walls roll up for that real at-one feeling with the wilderness. The furnished lake-facing deck is perfect for lounging with binoculars and a coffee.

Activities

Combine calm sailing and wildlife thrills on Magashi's eight-seater swamp cruiser. It's an ideal way to glimpse waterbirds, get up close to hippo and crocodile, and spot elusive sitatunga antelope which dwell on the verges of the swamps. Guided walks help you understand the little things. Game drives are special, as Magashi is the park's only private concession (no other vehicles!). Such privilege also includes night drives – great opportunities to look out for leopard (there's a healthy local population).
